The strivings of the athletes were offerings of their best and cheating was out of the question since the Gods would see straight through any subtefuge.<br /><br />As the old religion died so too did the Games. They became tainted with commercialism and competitors fought for reward rather than honour.<br /><br />Thus today, the modern Olympics have turned full circle from the idealism of the early days of the 1890s to now when fully professional athletes compete for careers and cash rather than pleasure. The games have become tainted and are dying. The global machinery of the administration has also become an all-devouring monster, feeding upon corrupt alliances between mutually back-scratching national Olympic administrations which keep their members in luxurious and comfortable splendour and patronage. The proposed 2012 London Olympics are typical and will differ from previous examples of financial chicanery only in the sums involved being larger than before. Montreal is still paying off their financial bloodletting. Sydney,Barcelona and Athens just haven't totted up the final bills yet.<br /><br />I don't want the 2012 Games. I didn't want them in my London and I want to be able to say: -<br /><br /><span style="font-size:180%;color:#ff0000;"><strong>I DON'T WANT THEM!</strong></span><br /><br />I don't want to have public money spent on them and I don't want my children and my grandchildren paying for them for ever and a day. Politicians love the events like the Games. They can then give their friends jobs and contracts to spend money on the Games. Just like the Milennium Dome - how do you spend a billion pounds building a plastic tent? Well, its difficult but you get your friends to help you, don't you? Its no different with the 2012 Games. Look at all the money that is being spent now. Its just the start. Most of North-East London is going to be built over and then what? All the parks in London are going to bulldozed over to provide venues to be used just for a couple of weeks. Will we get our parks back again? It'll be Mr Spock saying "They are parks, Captain, but not as we knew them". What do you think?<br /><br />I'm not against athletics. If someone wants to run round the block and work up a sweat that's fine with me. Just don't ask me to give up my London for your exercise. That's why I have set up this blog.
